Do You Need to Improve Your Self Discipline?
Most of us will at some point or other in our lives question the use of self discipline in our life. If you look closer at this question however and see how it truly relates to you, the answer will become clear: yes, you do need self discipline in your life.
The answer might be clear, but the question you need to ask yourself is: Are you willing to do what it takes to work through these problems and become a well-rounded human being? Are you willing to work on the lack of discipline in your life? If the answer was a resounding ‘Yes!’ then you don’t have to look far to find out what to do.
As a normal human being you will have many tasks which need to be completed each day. Some of these tasks are small and take just a few minutes of your time. Others will take a few hours to complete.
Depending on the task however, there is a good chance you will decide to start on that task in a few minutes time. And when those few minutes are up, you will decide to put it off yet again, and only start on it after you have finished whatever it is you are presently doing.
And this is where you go wrong and where lack of discipline holds you back. This leads to procrastination and a task which could have been finished without any problem or rush, and which now has to be finished very quickly.
The key to avoiding this type of time mismanagement is to set time limits you will keep to. These time limits do not have to be very strict in the beginning but they do need to be followed through. To help you with this you should start with small tasks to complete.
One tip you can use to help you start out is to use a book to record the various tasks you need to do for the morning and allocate a set time for each task. As the day progresses make sure you complete each task in the order it was listed and in that time frame. This is a good place to start your training in self discipline.
However you should not stop once you have completed these tasks. Continue on in the same vein for all of your other work, and you will find you are losing less time than normal, and that you are completing projects faster than you were before.
One good way to ensure you don’t lose hope with lost time is to make sure that the time allocated for each job is small and doable. This in turn means that when you start the job you know you can finish it.
An example of this would be cleaning up after a meal. You know the task has to be completed so you should set a time limit to first washing just the dishes. Once the dishes have been washed you then set a time limit for cleaning up, sweeping, taking the trash out etc.
By breaking down this large job into small segments you ensured that you completed the task in a minimal amount of time.
So you see, getting a job done doesn’t mean you spend all of your time on it. By breaking the job into doable sections you complete the task effectively and in good time. So by keeping track of your time you easily maintain your self discipline right throughout your entire day.
