Top 3 Traits of Blockbuster Book Titles
You may not be able to judge a book by its cover, but you sure can sell one by its title.
My favorite example is in Michael Larsen’s How to Write a Book Proposal, where he tells about a book entitled Everything Men Know about Women. Every page of the book was blank, but it sold over 500,000 copies!
Now, that’s an extreme case, but one cannot overstate the importance of a great title.
Here are three sure-fire strategies to create a blockbuster title for your book.
1) Sell & Tell: The main title must ’sell,’ meaning it needs to grab the attention of your reader, be memorable, and, ideally capture their imagination or be a call to action. The subtitle must ‘tell,’ that is: inform the potential buyer of the key benefit in reading the book.
2) Title reflects the content: This is not the time to be cute, cagey, or esoteric. Keep it clear and simple, especially for the non-fiction, how to, self-help categories. A catchy title or clever sub-title won’t help you at all if it misleads the reader.
3) Play on words: Incorporate or modify idioms, phrases, other book titles, song titles, etc. already in the collective consciousness. I see this over and over in best-selling titles. Rich Dad, Poor Dad is a play on the 70s TV show hit ‘Rich Man, Poor Man’, Conversations with Millionaires is a new twist on the famous Conversations with God book series, and the list goes on and on…
Go to Amazon.com or your local bookstore and check out the best-sellers. Find your own examples of these three key principles.
